History
It
was the summer of 1895 when Louis Schmidt
sold his first monument from what was then
“Marshfield Marble & Granite.”
The business began on the same
downtown site as today’s version at 435 S.
Central Ave.
Schmidt
employed two men, Ed Beck and John Rhodes.
Beck and Rhodes eventually bought the
business from its founder in 1938.
It remained in the Rhodes family
until it was purchased by John Hopperdietzel
in 1977.
Today his son Brian owns the
business.
The
business has grown since 1977, from a staff
of John and one other to today’s 5
fulltime workers, five part-timers and 6
salespeople.
Marshfield
Monument services between 800 and 1,000
families.
In his first year, Schmidt sold to 20
families.
The
tools of the monument trade have been
altered by over 100 years of technology.
Years ago, everything was done by
hand. All
the monument designs were drawn by hand and
engraved into the marker with a hammer and
chisel.
Now most of the markers are designed
with a computer and engraved by
sandblasting.
Technology doesn’t substitute for
everything.
Some markers are still designed and
engraved on the stone by hand. Jet Black
Granite gives us the ability to hand etch
complex designs and portraits.
